The department of psychiatry at Rhode Island Hospital is one of the leading general hospital clinical, educational and research programs in the nation. Activities at Rhode Island Hospital and its pediatric arm, Hasbro Children's, include the full spectrum of psychiatric services for adults and children.
In addition to a psychiatric emergency program, which experiences nearly 10,000 visits each year, there are inpatient services for adults, a specialized geriatric unit, and a unique medical psychiatric program at Hasbro Children’s, which addresses the needs of children and adolescents who are struggling with both psychiatric and medical illness. The Rhode Island Hospital psychiatry program employs more 95 full-time doctoral level psychiatrists and psychologists.
The Miriam Hospital is nationally recognized for expertise in the fields of behavioral medicine and geriatrics. Its Geriatric Behavioral Health Long-Term Care Program assures that older residents of nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and assisted-living facilities in Rhode Island receive specialized geriatric psychiatric services, while its Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine is one of Brown University Health’s most successful research enterprises—with nationally renowned faculty in areas including weight management, exercise and management of high risk behaviors leading to health problems.
Outpatient mental health services are provided by a multidisciplinary group of board-certified psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical nurse specialists and social workers. Brown University Health provides services at convenient locations throughout the region.
Inpatient psychiatry services include assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients requiring a safe, secure environment for treatment of the full range of psychiatric problems.
Bradley Hospital, the nation's first psychiatric hospital devoted exclusively to children and adolescents, has been at the forefront in the treatment of children's mental illness for more than 75 years.
Programs at Bradley Hospital include inpatient, partial hospital, outpatient, residential and school. Along with Hasbro Children's, Bradley Hospital is the major training center for Alpert Medical School's Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program, the triple board residency program and the psychology internship and postdoctoral fellowship program.
We are proud of our record in recruiting and retaining distinguished clinicians and scholars who are regarded as leaders in their respective fields. We are also proud of our efforts to decrease the stigma of mental illness.
On Aquidneck Island, Newport Hospital offers the community a range of adult psychiatric services that include emergency, inpatient, partial hospital and outpatient capabilities. In addition, the psychiatry program provides consultative collaboration with medical and surgical programs for their inpatients with co-occurring mental health or substance use disorders.
Gateway Healthcare is a non-profit behavioral health care organization that provides a wide array of services to adults, children and families in Rhode Island. Our services are available to people of all cultural and economic backgrounds, who may not otherwise have access to the services they need.
